Rusty Gold Coins Recall Follies of Past Empires

St. George gold coins from Russia's Central bank are rusting--something .999 pure gold doesn't do. The Russian St. George gold coins appear to contain impurities; brown spots and streaks are clearly visible under a jeweler's loupe, and the coins are different in color when held up next to a pure gold coin.

I was shocked when I found out about it about a month ago.
I hope US Mint doesn’t do anything like that.

Can you imagine a bank telling you that you allowed gold to rust? You would think just the thought of gold rusting would have caused a banker to have a heart attack.

Somebody in St. Pete’s was debasing the metal in those coins. In the US, according to law, that would be a capital offense. Can’t imagine it’s any less serious in Russia. =0[.]o=

A similar problem exists in usmint one ounce 24k gold buffalo’s… especially 2006 minted… not so much with buff fractionals and spouse half ounce coins. No official word/explanation from usmint to my knowledge.

Coin forums have threads dedicated to this situation — and pics posted.
